Rare Ancient Near Eastern Terracotta Eye Idol w/ TL

Ancient Near East, Syria, ca. late 3rd to early 2nd millennium BCE. An intriguing terracotta idol with a roughly-circular body, rounded peripheries, and a pair of pierced "eyes" surrounded by thinly-incised striations. Scholars posit that idols like this example were used in the process of twining fibrous strands together to create workable material. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 4" W x 4.375" H (10.2 cm x 11.1 cm); 8.375" H (21.3 cm) on included custom stand.

Cf. similar objects, identified as twining pieces, in: Fortin, Michel. Syria: Land of Civilizations. Quebec, 1994, p. 183, no. 124.

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.

Condition: Light abrasions and small nicks to eyes, body, and peripheries, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits and great manganese blooms throughout.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-William Froelich collection, New York, USA, acquired in the 1970s
