Ancient Greece, Athens, ca. 5th century BCE. A stunning white ground lekythos of a classic cylindrical body with a disc foot and a funnel lip. The piece is beautifully decorated with two registers of lattice motifs surrounding two registers of hearts alternating with dotted circular motifs. Below these are striated bands, and the shoulder is adorned by a ray band. Lekythos vases were among the various offerings and monuments paying tribute to the deceased in Athenian cemeteries. Lekythos vessels traditionally held oil and were decorated in the white ground technique from the middle until the end of the fifth century BCE. Size: 6.125" H (15.6 cm)
