Indian Gupta Sandstone Frieze - Three Dancers

Central Asia, India, Uttar Pradesh, later Gupta Period, ca. 6th to 7th century CE. A fine example of an early sandstone wall decoration - from a temple, palace, or other important building - depicting three dancers, one of whom is probably the Hindu god Vishnu based on his conical hat. The figures have delightful, stylized bodies, with broad shoulders and narrow waists. They stand on a pedestal with a dotted border. Size: 5.25" W x 6" H (13.3 cm x 15.2 cm); 8" H (20.3 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition: Piece is a fragment. Two tiny patches of white paint on the sides. Wear to edges and details, but form is still present.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; purchased in Mathura, India, in 1958
