Early 20th C. Nepalese Wooden Squatting Guardian Figure

Central Asia, Nepal, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden anthropomorphic figure depicted in a squatting position atop an integral circular base. The figure has its legs drawn up to its hips and has a tubular abdomen with arms drawn to its chest in a praying position. The head is flanked by planar shoulders and bears recessed eyes, a bar-shaped nose, an open mouth above a rounded chin, and ovoid ears. Guardian figures like this are typically found in or around dwellings in Nepal to ward against disease, evil spirits, or other malevolent forces. Size: 6.5" W x 17.125" H (16.5 cm x 43.5 cm); 18.375" H (46.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition: Losses to areas of base, chest, back, and head. Several stable hairline fissures, minor chips to body and head, and softening to some finer details. Nice earthen deposits and great patina throughout.
