Contemporary Kaiko Moti Signed Lithograph of Horses

Kaiko Moti (Indian, 1921-1989), color lithograph of horses on Arches paper, signed in pencil and numbered (edition 207/300) on lower right, ca. late 20th century. A wonderful lithograph of seven horses in motion rendered in an ephemeral, delicate aesthetic that is unique to Kaiko Moti. Moti was a 20th century Indian artist - a painter and printmaker - who created beautiful compositions of animals, landscapes, and flowers. His works are imbued with a shimmering, almost watery light which serves to emphasize movement, and creates an atmospheric quality that is unique to his oeuvre. Born in Bombay in 1921, Moti first studied at the Bombay School of Fine Art prior to moving to London in 1946. In London, Moti studied at the Slade School of Art of the University College. In 1950, he moved to Paris to study with the sculptor Ossip Zadkine followed by printmaker Stanley William Hayter two years later. Size: 27.75" W x 20.75" H (70.5 cm x 52.7 cm)

Interestingly, Moti transitioned from sculpture to printmaking, in part because his Parisian studio was so small. What a happy happenstance! Moti went on to have a successful career and exhibited at the Venice Biennale, the Basel Art Fair, and the New York Public Library. He was also named an honorary member of the Academy of Florence. Today, his works are in esteemed collections such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Musee d’Art Moderne in Paris.
