Ancient W. Asiatic Coral Amulet - Seated Lion

Western Asia, ca. 800 BCE. A lovely diminutive lion pendant, hand-carved from a orange-red coral. The figure is seated upon retracted legs, its prideful chest puffed out and supported by large front legs with a curved back leading towards a thick tail. The stylized head depicts a petite nose, a full mouth, and slit-form eyes all set beneath a pair of curled ears. The amulet is drilled vertically through the back for suspension. Size: 1.25" L x 0.5" W x 1.2" H (3.2 cm x 1.3 cm x 3 cm).

Condition: Surface wear and minor abrasions commensurate with age, fading to some areas of incised details, and light roughness across most surfaces, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits throughout.

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection
