Published Hodgkinson Watercolor (1979) & Dedicated Book

Frank George Hodgkinson (Australian, 1919-2001). "Brolga" (Australian crane) - watercolor & pencil - 1979. Also included: "Frank Hodgkinson" (The Beagle Press, Sydney, 1994) with handwritten dedication to Betty Silverstein on frontispiece. Born in Sydney, Hodgkinson celebrated the uniqueness of Australia with his art. Here he has painted a stunning tribute to the Brolga (Antigone rubicunda), a large gray Australian crane known for its entertaining mating ritual involving wing flapping, leaping, and trumpeting. Hodgkinson added observational notes and sketches below, such as "wing span 2 m; rump paler grey; Brolga stands taller than a metre; legs dark grey to black; primary wing feathers darker". In addition to being a talented artist, Hodgkinson was a prolific writer and his handwritten text is oftentimes combined with his paintings to "become a duality of literary and figurative artistry" (Dr. Colin Jack-Hinton of Museums & Art Galleries of the Northern Territory). Size: 22.5" W x 16.5" H (57.2 cm x 41.9 cm)

Frank George Hodgkinson was born in Sydney in 1919. He studied art with Dattilo Rubbo and Sydney Long. Immediately post war he studied at L’ Academie de la Grande Chaumiere, Paris and with Bernard Meninsky at the Central School of Art in London. Between 1947 and 1953, he lived and worked in Paris, Florence, Rome, Madrid, Barcelona and London. From 1958, he returned to work and exhibit in Europe, living mostly in Spain and in the USA. He returned to Australia in 1971 to live in North Queensland, Melbourne and Sydney where in 1973 he designed and built a house and studio in the Hawksbury River sandstone country where he lived and worked until his death in 2001.
