Early 20th C. Papua New Guinea Painted Wood Panel

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A dramatic, brightly colored wooden decorative carving, a panel deeply incised and painted on one side, with an openwork motif of a standing abstract anthropomorphic figure. The figure has a large, diamond-shaped head and a rectangular body, with insect-like and fish-like decorations on its body below its small face. Dark, earthy red and white pigment colors the incised forms. Size: 7.25" W x 21.6" H (18.4 cm x 54.9 cm)

Condition: Rich, dark patina on surface with some light deposits and surface weathering commensurate with age.

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
