Borneo Carved Wooden Box End - Abstract Animal

Borneo, Malay Archipelago, shared by Indonesia and Malaysia, ca. early to mid 20th century. Wonderfully attractive and whimsical, a carved wooden box end by the indigenous Dayak people of Borneo. Carved from a single trunk of a tree and appears to be in the form of an abstract feline with a large toothy grin, alert ears, high relief circular eyes, and a long thin nose. The legs are splayed and give it an almost insect-like appearance. Classic Dayak and a very rare and attractive figure! Size: 14.25" L x 19" W x 8" H (36.2 cm x 48.3 cm x 20.3 cm)

Condition: Repaired from 4 large pieces, feet show cut marks where removed from original box, chips to ears, nice deep patina from years of use and exposure to the elements.

Provenance: private Johnson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA
