20th C. PNK Sepik River Fern Wood Ancestral Figure

Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, ca. mid 20th century CE. A fascinating carving made from dense palm wood, formed into an ancestral figure with a human face and crab-like body. Cowrie shell eyes are the only bright spot in an otherwise dark brown surface. The carvings jut outward from an integral bar, asking the viewer to look at them in profile to see their full scope. Size: 5.85" W x 45" H (14.9 cm x 114.3 cm)

Condition: Small losses and cracks on edges.
