20th C. Democratic Republic of the Congo Wood Figure

Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, probably Zande people, ca. mid 20th century CE. A haunting divination figure, hand-carved from wood, with female genitalia and a projecting belly button perhaps indicative of pregnancy. The figure has long arms, slightly crouched legs, and a big head with enormous, almond-shaped eyes filled with caked white pigment. White eyes indicate that the figure is clairvoyant. Size: 3.45" W x 11.95" H (8.8 cm x 30.4 cm); 13.2" H (33.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition: Patina on surface from age and handling. Eye inlays are partially lost.
