20th C. African Lega Wood Mask with Beard

Central Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Lega peoples, ca. mid 20th century CE. A planar oval wooden mask with a delicate ridged nose, small almond-shaped eyes, and a deep mouth. The surface has been painted with a thick, earthy, white pigment with sparkling mineral inclusions. A braided raffia beard hangs down from the face. Size: 3.85" W x 5.25" H (9.8 cm x 13.3 cm); 16.4" H (41.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition: Nice condition with much remaining pigment as shown. Light scratching on wood surface commensurate with age.
