19th C. European / African Ivory Corpus Christi

European, ivory from an Africa elephant, ca. 19th century CE. A skillfully executed, carved ivory Crucified Christ, this is a poignant piece that captures the drama and sorrow of His tragedy with a truly graphic depiction. Christ's anatomy is skillfully delineated with elongated limbs and a severely emaciated torso and limbs, with perforations through the hands and feet perhaps representing stigmata (the marks indicative of Christ's Crucifixion wounds). Only wearing a loincloth and crown of thorns, Christ is depicted with as much of his suffering body as is possible. This piece was carved from African elephant ivory, as most ivory carved in Europe during the nineteenth century originated in Africa. The artisan of this piece was clearly influenced by theatrical European Baroque depictions of Christ Crucified. Size: 8.625" H (21.9 cm)
