Lot 17, Auction 4/20/2026: Large Mississippian Etched Pottery Jar w/ Flared Spout
$520.00
In stock
Native American, Mississippian culture, ca. 800 to 1600 CE. A commanding pottery jar of impressive scale with a flared rim and broad, swelling body, its surface animated by densely incised, curvilinear patterns that ripple across the upper register in layered bands. The textured decoration, composed of repeated fine-line impressions, creates a tactile and visual rhythm that contrasts with the smoother lower body, where subtle burnishing and firing clouds remain visible. Such vessels were likely used for storage or communal purposes, their size and careful ornamentation suggesting both practical function and aesthetic intention within Mississippian ceramic traditions. Size: 10.3″ Diameter x 11.9″ H (26.2 cm x 30.2 cm)
Condition: Professionally repaired with restoration over break lines and to rim. Weathering to surface as shown, commensurate with age. Otherwise, nice presentation with scattered earthen deposits.
Provenance: private Colorado, USA Collection; ex-private Denver, Colorado, USA collection; ex-private New York, USA collection
