Native American, Northwestern United States, Columbia River region, ca. 19th century CE. A large Columbia River stone pestle or club, carved in a long tapering form with a rounded working end and a distinct knobbed handle that gives the piece a strong, purposeful silhouette. The object is shaped from dense stone, likely basalt, with a smooth, timeworn surface in pale gray to buff tones. The shaft narrows gradually toward the handle, where a raised collar and rounded terminal create a grip-like profile. The opposite end is heavier and more blunt, consistent with a tool designed for pounding, grinding, or striking. Dark mineral spotting and natural surface variation remain visible across the body, adding to the sense of age and long use. Size: 21.6″ L x 2.7″ W (54.9 cm x 6.9 cm)

Stone pestles were essential tools throughout the Columbia River and greater Plateau region, used for processing roots, seeds, berries, and other staple foods. Without excavation context, the exact function cannot be stated with certainty, but the craftsmanship and proportions strongly suggest a working tool made to last. Condition: Weathering to surface with nicks, chips, and abrasions throughout, all commensurate with age. Otherwise, intact and very nice with light patina in areas.
