Native American, Midwestern United States, Missouri, ca. 19th century or earlier CE. A small coral carving depicting an abstract quadruped form, possibly intended as a bison or a bear. The body is compact and blocky, with short legs and a slightly raised shoulder mass. Faint inked writing appears on one side, for Boone County Missouri. Fossilized coral occurs naturally in Missouri and was occasionally used by Native American artists as a workable organic material for small carvings, ornaments, and symbolic objects, valued for its unusual texture and visual character. Size: 2″ L x 1.8″ W (5.1 cm x 4.6 cm)
Condition: Natural pitting and light mineral deposits. Findsite writing on one side and inventory number.
