$390.00

In stock

South America, Peru / Bolivia, Quechua and Aymara cultures, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. Three woven wool textiles, likely sheep or camelid fiber such as alpaca, including two ponchos with central head openings and striped geometric bands in red, cream, brown, and blue tones. These two are traditionally made and handwoven, with separate panels seamed together to create a large panel. The third textile is a rectangular striped cloth with fringed ends, and appears to be a machine-woven piece, showing more regular striping and a smoother, more uniform and supple weave compared to the handwoven ponchos. Size blue stripe poncho: 70″ L x 61″ W (177.8 cm x 154.9 cm)

Condition: Blue stripe poncho and brown are heavily worn with holes, tears, fraying, and losses to fibers. The blue poncho has a cotton backing added along one edge, possibly for display purposes. Red textile has small holes and small areas of fiber losses, and some light discoloration.

Provenance: private Ventura County, California, USA collection, before 2000
