Framed 1950s Panamanian Textile Mola- Lot 136c, Auction 2/1/2018

Central America, Panama, San Blas Islands, Kuna / Cuna, ca. 1950 CE. A nice, early example of this folk art form depicting five tropical creatures, including avian and reptilian critters. Kuna women have practiced this textile technique for 125 years, stitching many fabric layers of a wide variety of colors. In this piece, the artist incorporated fabrics of red, orange, green, yellow, pink, brown, blue, purple, and black hues. Size: 14.875″ L x 17″ W (37.8 cm x 43.2 cm); 18.5″ L x 20.5″ W (47 cm x 52.1 cm) framed

Condition: Expected fading to fabrics. Paper backing to frame is torn. Mola in overall good condition.
