19th C. Mexican Carved Wooden Santo – Virgin Mary- Lot 520, Auction 3/25/2019

Sold

Latin America, Mexico, ca 19th century CE. An antique wooden santo figure depicting the Virgin Mary, hand carved and painted, donning a crown and dressed in voluminous blue and white robes, standing or perhaps floating upon a near-spherical orb symbolic of the universe, all upon an integral oval base. Both of her removable hands are missing, an unfortunate fate all too common for older Santos. Given the positioning of these hands, it is possible that she once held an image of the Christ Child. Size: 4″ W x 10.25″ H (10.2 cm x 26 cm)

Condition: Removable hands are missing. Expected surface wear and pigment losses as shown.

Provenance: Ex – Collection of Deacon K. Giacone
