16th C. Russian Enameled Bronze Cross – Ornate Design

Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. late 15th to early 16th century CE. A light brown cast-bronze cross with a pierced suspension bail, slightly flared terminals, and an interior Golgotha cross. Above the interior cross is the monogram UPb CBp (King of Glory), and each respective lateral end has IC XC (Jesus Christ) The image of Adam’s skull in the cave is underneath the interior cross, and the monogram MPN (the place of the skull has become paradise) is beneath that. The verso contains finely-detailed imagery of Christ’s journey along the pathway to Heaven, though much of the iconography has faded over time. Traces of original colored enameled details are visible, and light brown patina covers the surface. Size: 1″ W x 1.75″ H (2.5 cm x 4.4 cm).

Condition: Surface wear commensurate with age, fading to details and lettering, with original enamel remnants visible. Lovely light brown patina. Integral suspension loop as shown.
