West African Ekoi Wood, Hide, & Human Hair Fetish- Lot 30, Auction 7/1/2019

West Africa, Nigeria, Ekoi (Ejagham) peoples, early 20th century CE. A headpiece made of antelope hide over a wood form, with human hair on its head and wooden teeth that project from its mouth. The eyes are wide and staring, the nose prominent, and two round projections from either side of the head contribute to its inhuman look. The arms are articulated and removable, also made of hide over wood. The hands are broad, as if made to hold something. Size: 9.5″ H (24.1 cm)

Condition: Piece is fragile and in three pieces (the arms are removable). The hide is cracked, with losses in some areas.

Provenance: Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA, acquired prior to 1970
