Early 20th C. Yoruba Wooden Ibeji Figure- Lot 469, Auction 4/30/2018

West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved male Ere Ibeji twin figure with large feet and parted legs, delineated genitalia, protruding abdomen, hanging arms with a metal ring around each, rounded shoulders, and a thick neck. The head displays almond-shaped eyes with applied wooden pupils, large ears, facial scarification marks around the cheeks and nose, and an intricately-carved upswept coiffure which is embellished with organic blue indigo pigment. He stands atop a circular base with an incised cross-hatch pattern around the circumference. Size: 9.375″ H (23.8 cm).

Condition: Age-commensurate surface wear, losses to back, base, arms, and back of head, with earthen deposits in recessed areas. Some stable hairline fissures are visible around the lower torso, back, and arms.
