Roman Pottery Oil Lamp – Dots and Swastika

Roman Empire, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. This near-miniature mold-made terracotta vessel has a raised ring base with a recessed center, smooth bottom, sharply-angled sides, rounded shoulders with several raised dots and circles, a jagged fill hole encircled by two raised concentric rings, a miniscule protruding handle, and a small wick spout with a tapering neck. Just above the wick spout is a pseudo-pointillist swastika motif created from several individual raised dots. Size: 3″ L x 2.625″ W x 1.25″ H (7.6 cm x 6.7 cm x 3.2 cm).

Condition: Surface wear and chips commensurate with age, char marks around wick spout, and minor ancient losses to fill hole and wick spout.

Provenance: private Orange County, California USA collection, acquired before 2000
