Rare & Important Roman Silver Medallion – Juno- Lot 26a, Auction 4/17/2018

Sold

Roman Empire, ca. 1st to 3rd centuries CE. A round silver medallion decorated in repousse with a goddess holding a mirror and a bird, perhaps a peacock, in profile to her left. In Roman mythology, the peacock is associated with the ancient Roman goddess Juno, the queen of the gods, protector and special counselor to the state, and goddess of the sky and the stars, who created the peacock from Argus whose “hundred eyes” seen on the tailfeathers of the peacock symbolize the vault of heaven and the “eyes” of the stars. Beyond this, since the peacock replaces its feathers annually, the ancients viewed the peacock as a symbol of renewal. Surrounding this image is a leafy border. A pair of rings are attached, one to each side, for attachment. A marvelous piece of wearable art replete with detailed mythological iconography. Size: 2.25″ W (5.7 cm) at widest point

Condition: Some bending and earthen encrustation commensurate with age and weathering. A few tiny, near invisible fissures.

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection, acquired before 2000
