Michoacan Pottery Pretty Lady Figure w/ Huge Ear Spools- Lot 134a, Auction 12/20/2018

Sold

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Protoclassic period, ca. 500 to 100 BCE. A hand-built pottery “pretty lady” figure with a highly-burnished surface and faint red-orange pigmentation. She stands upon delineated legs, has a portly abdomen, ample breasts, attenuated arms, and an incised necklace. Impressed diamond-shaped eyes, a prominent nose, and a gaping mouth constitute her minimalist visage, with a pair of enormous ear spools flanking either side of a neatly-arranged coiffure, and a simple incised headband topping the head. Custom wooden display stand included. Size: 2″ W x 3.875″ H (5.1 cm x 9.8 cm); 5″ H (12.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition: Very minor nicks to legs, body, arms, and head, with fading to original pigmentation, and softening to some finer details, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits and great manganese blooms throughout.

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
