Moche Spouted Vessel w/ Seated Ai Apec- Lot 248, Auction 2/26/2018

Sold

Pre-Columbian, Peru (North Coast), Moche Culture, ca. 100 to 700 CE. This is an iconographically fantastic example of one of the classic forms of pre-Columbian pottery – the Moche stirrup vessel, using the shape of a seated human body and attaching a curved handle and tall, thin spout to create a ceremonial drinking vessel. The class of artisans and potters in Moche urban centers created this vessel for a member of the elite. It was placed in that person’s tomb as a grave offering to demonstrate wealth as he or she began his or her journey into the afterlife. This particular vessel depicts Ai Apec, the chief deity of the Moche culture. He bears the identifying marks of the god, with feline fangs extending from his fierce mouth and twin snakes wrapped around his body to form part of his headdress. He has large earrings and a belt with wave-like iconography, perhaps because Ai Apec is often associated with the uncontrollable power of the sea.
