Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Guanacaste/Nicoya region, ca. 200 to 600 CE. Finely carved from a stone of pale green hues, an avian axe god, the lower section a nice celt form, the upper section representing an abstract bird denizen of the Costa Rican rainforest with a delicately delineated beak at the mid section, laterally drilled just above for suspension, but also suggesting eye forms, and striated bands above perhaps to represent a crest. Size: ~ 2.75″ W x 3.625″ H (7 cm x 9.2 cm)
Condition: Minor surface wear, overall excellent.
Provenance: Whisnant Gallery, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA acquired over twenty years ago
