Colima Redware Olla w/ Interesting Fluted Design- Lot 140, Auction 2/25/2019

Sold

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A burnished redware vessel of an intriguing top-like shape, the upper body modeled with wide horizontal fluting leading to a short slightly flared neck, the rounded base with a dimpled bottom. Quite an unusual form – while many Colima vessels represent gourds, fruits, or vegetables, with vertical ribs, this one departs from those with its horizontal ribs. Size: 7.5″ in diameter x 7.125″ H (19 cm x 18.1 cm)

Condition: Chip to rim. Repaired from approximately a half dozen pieces. Probe hole visible on lower wall.

Provenance: Ex-private Olan collection, California, by family descent, acquired 1960 to 1970.
