Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Chupicuaro, ca. 550 to 100 BCE. A handbuilt seated bi-chrome figure with one hand placed upon uplifted knee and the other to his stomach, facing front with a characteristically oversized head presenting a lively visage comprised of coffee bean shaped eyes, a protruding nose, and an open mouth as if singing or chanting. His face is painted with a red, stepped mask that spans from ear to ear. Quite expressive! Size: 3.25″ W x 4.5″ H (8.3 cm x 11.4 cm)

Condition: Left foot and right knee reattached. Tiny nicks to upper lip. Normal surface wear. Areas of manganese deposits.

Provenance: collection of Albert J. and Monique Grant, New York City, USA; acquired 1950’s to 1960’s
