Chavin Pottery Long-Neck Greyware Vessel- Lot 70a, Auction 1/4/2018

Sold

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chavin, 900 to 200 BCE. A greyware vessel with a rounded body, a flat base, and a narrow, tapering neck that flares outward into a steep rim. Simply formed and elegant, this piece has an almost modern sensibility despite its ancient origins. Probably made to hold chicha, maize beer, with its narrow neck to prevent evaporation. Size: 5.5″ W x 7.75″ H (14 cm x 19.7 cm)

Condition: Spout has been repaired, as has a probe hole low on the body. Both repairs are well done and very difficult to see.

Provenance: private Rochester, Michigan, USA collection
