Sold

Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. early 19th century CE. Finely painted in egg tempera and gold leaf on wood, this icon depicts a standing Saint Sergius of Radonezh wearing a long black vestment. Staring skyward in front of a coronal halo, he holds a lengthy scroll in his left hand while offering benediction with his right. Sergius is well-known for his visions of the Trinitarian mystery, whose messages he advocated, and is believed to be the first Russian saint to record his visions of the Mother of God. He is also the founder of the Monastery of the Holy Trinity near Moscow. This icon may be incomplete as the scroll held by St. Sergius typically has some Cyrillic text included. Size: 5.125″ W x 8.7″ H (13 cm x 22.1 cm).

Condition: Minor wear to surface pigmentation and around peripheries as shown. Minor chips and cracks to upper and lower wood insertions. A small pierced hole along with two small metal screws with a metal wire for suspension on verso.
