19th C. Mexican Carved Wood Tile w/ Dancers on Horses- Lot 182, Auction 8/26/2019

Sold

New World, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. A wood tile depicting a low relief motif of two dancers standing atop horses. The horses in particular are well-depicted, as if the artist was more interested in the animals than the dancers! There seems to be some paint in the lower profile areas, indicating that this may have been used as a stamp. Size: 4.2″ W x 4.3″ H (10.7 cm x 10.9 cm)

Condition: Area of inactive insect damage on right side (facing) of the tile. Patina on surface.

Provenance: private collection of Lupita Tovar, silent screen actress of the 1930s, Bel-Air, California, USA
