18th C. Trio of Spanish Colonial Silver Spoon / Tupus- Lot 211, Auction 12/27/2019

New World, Spanish Colonial Period, ca. 18th century CE. A group of three silver objects from the Spanish Colonial period, probably from South America. One is a large-bowled spoon with a curved handle and a chain hanging from it. The other two are tupus – garment pins with engraved, spoon-shaped finials. These were made to be worn in pairs to pin a cloak or mantle to the shoulders, and were signs of status for those who wore them. The engravings on these are of flowers and vines. Size of largest (spoon): 1.95″ W x 7″ H (5 cm x 17.8 cm); 107.7 grams

Condition: Slight bending to forms, with patina.

Provenance: private Moore collection, Denver, Colorado, USA, acquired thirty years ago
