18th C. Italian Ceramic Majolica Vase- Lot 729, Auction 9/24/2018

Sold

Europe, Italy, ca. 18th century CE. A flask-shaped vase made of tin-glazed pottery, known as majolica or maiolica. The vessel stands on an elongated ovoid foot and has a short spout ending in a slightly thickened rim. Both sides are painted with the same beautiful scene, black outlined details with shades of blue, depicting a magical landscape where turrets and domes rise above tree-covered hillsides. Another, lighter city in the sky floats above the main city, this one made entirely of blue, with no black outlines. The scene resembles the hill towns of Tuscany, with a touch of fantasy. Blue glaze has been deliberately dripped around the mouth of the spout, and both scenes and the base are separated by a yellow and black border. Size: 3.95″ W x 5.55″ H (10 cm x 14.1 cm)

Condition: Spout has been repaired in one place. Small losses to base but piece easily stands on its own.

Provenance: private collection of Lupita Tovar, silent screen actress of the 1930s, Bel-Air, California, USA
