Central Europe (Germany, Austria), Danube River Basin, Eastern Hallstatt Culture, ca. 8th to 6th century BCE. A wonderful bronze bracelet with a loosely-coiled form. Made by coiling a long and flattened bronze strip with a narrow exterior ridge, the tight spiral form was a markedly popular style of late Bronze Age and Iron Age Europe. Often buried with woman of high social status, bracelets like this were symbolic of the status of the deceased and are common finds in dig sites across Central Europe. A lovely forest green patina gives this bracelet a lustrous appearance. Size: 2.375″ W x 1.75″ H (6 cm x 4.4 cm).
Hallstatt culture developed from the earlier Urnfield culture, and would progress into the later La Tene culture, which is often called Celtic. However, these names and classifications have been imposed upon ancient peoples by archaeologists and historians (Hallstatt, for example, takes its name from the type site, which is located in Austria southeast of Salzburg). 2700 years ago, these people lived in small groups, probably loosely confederated for trading purposes but engaging in frequent warfare.
Condition: Age-commensurate surface wear, encrustations, and corrosion, with minor loss to one end. Deep green patina throughout. Slight bending to form.
