New World, Spanish Colonial, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. A charming hand painted, carved wood santo depicting St. Michael the Archangel complete with tin sword and helmet and wood shield reading “Quien como Dios”, a reference to St. Michael’s role during the Second Coming of Christ. The santo stands atop a large, tiered-stand in a dynamic pose: sword raised, shield out, one leg forward, dressed in clothing that looks reminiscent of that of a Roman legionary. Size: 5.75″ L x 6″ W x 13.5″ H (14.6 cm x 15.2 cm x 34.3 cm)
The figure has glass eyes and is painted in bright red and deep green, with silver- and gold-painted details. The tin helmet has applied flowers, giving it a whimsical look; the sword, meanwhile, is fearsome and curved. Large brown wings project from the angel’s back.
Santos played an important role in bringing the Catholic Church to the New World with the Spanish colonists. These religious figures were hand-carved and often furnished with crowns, jewels, and other accessories, usually funded by religious devotees, and were used as icons to explain the major figures – Mary, Christ, and the saints – to new, indigenous converts. Likewise, they served as a connection to the Old World for Spanish colonists far from home. They became a folk art tradition in the Spanish New World, from modern day Guatemala to as far north as New Mexico and Colorado. Many of them were lovingly cared for over the years, with repairs and paint added as they aged, and played an active part for a long time in the religious life of their communities.
Condition: Craquelure to the paint, especially on the upper body, with patina over much of the surface and small areas of loss to the paint as shown. Traces of wax to stabilize accessories.
