Greek Ionian Bi-Chrome Kylix

Sold

Magna Graecia, northern territories, Ionia, ca. 6th to 5th century CE. An attractive kylix (drinking cup) of a wide, finely thrown form on a concave flared foot with twin slightly raised loop handles, decorated in a characteristic bi-chrome finish that takes advantage of the rich contrasting play between the rich black glaze and buff ground. A lovely example impressive for its elegant silhouette, remarkable condition, and areas of iridescence. Size: 6.875″ W x 2.375″ H (17.5 cm x 6 cm)

Condition: One handle repaired from two pieces and reattached. Foot reattached. Chips to rim and base. Expected surface wear with scuffs and pigment losses commensurate with age. Still a lovely example from this Greek colony.

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection acquired before 2000
