Greek Campanian Blackware Ribbed Olpe

Sold

Magna Graecia, South Italy, Campania, ca. 4th century BCE. A squat olpe with a wide, flared neck and a bifurcated handle which rises from the shoulder and curves dramatically to the rim edge. The bulbous and extensively-ribbed body sits on a flat, stepped foot and has a deep, glossy black glaze that has attained a beautiful layer of silvery and rainbow iridescence. Campanian wares are among the five types of known pottery produced in the Greek South Italic colonies in the cities of Capua and Cumae. Size: 3.75″ H (9.5 cm).

Condition: Chips and losses to glazed surfaces, losses to rim and handle, and great mineral deposits. Silvery and rainbow iridescence has formed on both interior and exterior surfaces. An old white collection sticker which reads “468” is adhered to underside of foot.

Provenance: private Carlton collection, Orange County, California, USA
