East Asia, China, Sui Dynasty, ca. 581 to 618 CE. A squat terracotta “zhadou” vessel with a slight concave base, bulbous body, pinched neck, wide mouth, and a collared and flared rim. This piece is made from a heavy grey stoneware (high temperature fired ceramic) with a highly-reflective pale yellow glaze with light orange fritting veins caused during the firing process. Size: 4″ W x 3.375″ H (10.2 cm x 8.6 cm).
Condition: Age-commensurate surface wear, stable pressure cracks around neck circumference, losses and craquelure to glazed surfaces, minor losses to rim, foot, and unglazed areas of body, and nice earthen and mineral deposits.
