19th C Chinese Erotic Framed Watercolor, Didactic Scene- Lot 252, Auction 6/25/2018

Sold

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. last quarter of the 19th century. A framed erotic ink drawing on silk fabric. The artist has provided a bird’s eye view of this didactic scene in which a pair of lovers are being ‘taught’ about or ‘introduced’ to the pleasures of the flesh, the female in repose on a bed with her limbs spread, a red-robed teacher/attendant behind her, her male partner standing and clearly aroused by his beautiful partner with another teacher/attendant behind him – in the background, a window with a view of a bamboo garden – to the left an ornate side table with a gorgeous blue ceramic vessel holding a peacock feather and a red branch or piece of coral, and beyond a wash basin on a stand for cleansing – all hand drawn with ink and painted in watercolor. A wonderful example of erotic art rendered in a saucy yet tasteful manner. Set in a triple mat (gold, cornflower blue, and off-white linen) under glass in a gold-hued wooden frame. Size: image measures 10.125″ L x 7.375″ W (25.7 cm x 18.7 cm); framed 20.125″ L x 16.875″ W (51.1 cm x 42.9 cm)

Condition: Painting with minor areas of water marks/stains that are difficult to see at first glance. Mats in excellent condition. Surface wear and nicks to frame as shown. Only slight tears and stain to gallery paper on verso. Wired for easy suspension.
