Scythian Bronze Openwork Animal Applique- Lot 187, Auction 2/26/2018

Sold

Central Asia/Ancient Near East, Scythian culture, ca. 1st millennium BCE. A flat cast bronze applique buckle in the form of four Ibex heads, one at every corner. The iconography of the ibex is seen over and over again, replicated in gold, bronze, and stone, by the Scythians, other cultures in Central Asia, and their neighbors in the ancient Near East. Their meaning seems to be virility, and by extension health, strength, and power. Size: 1.55″ W x 1.55″ H (3.9 cm x 3.9 cm)

Condition: Smooth, dark patina on most of surface, with some very light encrustation. Pin is present but frozen in place.

Provenance: private New York, USA collection; ex Dr. Samuel Eilenberg collection, noted philanthropist to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the Museum of Fine Arts Boston
