Lot 232a, Auction 6/29/2017: Taino Stone Zoomorphic Idol - Important Example

Pre-Columbian, Hispaniola, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. Large and important example of the incredible stone work of the indigenous Arawak peoples of the Greater Antilles Islands. Greenstone lizard or caiman with human-like front legs bent forward to its head and rear legs bent toward the tail, sunken eyes and distinct protruding rib cage and notched spine, with deeply incised shoulder and hip sockets with skeletal head with typical Zemi attributes including small bat-like nose, deeply socketed eyes and carved grimacing mouth. While the exact usage of such stone objects is unknown, these were commonly found in tombs of elite members of the clan. Size: 12.25" L x 4.5" W (31.1 cm x 11.4 cm)
