DescriptionAncient Clay Foundation Cone from Sumeria, Isin (Tell Bahriayat), ca. 1953 – 1935 B.C. Nicely incised with a dedicatory inscription: "Ishme-Dagan, mighty man, King of Isin, King of four quarters (of the world), when he canceled the taxes of Nippur, the city beloved by Enlil, and excused its men from military/corvée service, he built the wall of the city of Isin, naming it Ishme-Dagan, the might (?) of the Great God." The modern Tell Bahriayat is the location of ancient Isin, well placed upon the ancient course of the Euphrates river in central Babylonia. 4-7/8"L, intact/excellent, save minor chipping to narrow end.

Provenance Ex-Royal Athena Gallery, New York, NY.
