DescriptionSuperb detailing! Ancient Roman Terracotta Antefix / Border Roof Tile, ca. 1st century A.D. of the style often found at Pompeii - and possibly from this site. Molded clay with white color pigment, in the form of a palmette springing from a frontal head of Minerva, flanked by scrolling, the round face framed by rows of scalloped hair, her wide almond-shaped eyes thickly lidded, her fleshy lips drawn into a pursed smile. These were placed at the roof's lower edge and formed the end of a line of imbrices. Their surfaces often show signs of wear from the weather. Piece itself measures 9"H x 6-1/2"W, with stand 12"H; intact/generally excellent condition, save loss to nose tip and stable age crack along left mouth edge. Custom mount.
ProvenanceEx-private Colorado Collection acquired at auction.
