Roman Pottery Oil Lamp - Erotic Scene

Rome, 2nd to 3rd century CE. This is a pottery oil lamp with a short, rounded nozzle and a pierced lug handle. The tops and bottoms of lamps like this were formed in separate molds and then pressed together prior to firing. This particular lamp shows an erotic scene on its discus, which was a common theme in Roman art, both for the delight of pornography and, some scholars argue, as symbols that could ward off evil. Size: 4.6" L x 3.35" W x 2" H (11.7 cm x 8.5 cm x 5.1 cm).

Condition: Wear and encrustation, but the design is visible. There is some red paint that appears more modern on the back of the handle.

Provenance: private New Jersey USA collection, acquired over twenty years ago
