18th C. Russian Enameled Bronze Cross

Sold

Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 18th century CE. A lovely cast-bronze cross with an integral tripartite suspension loop, representative of the Holy Trinity, as well as an interior Orthodox cross flanked by the symbolic spear and vinegar stick, two instruments of the Passion. The monogram UPb CBp (King of Glory) is above the interior cross, and IC XC (Jesus Christ) is on either respective lateral terminal. The image of Adam’s skull in the cave is beneath the slanted foot rest, and the monogram MAPE (the place of the cross has become paradise) is underneath that. The verso displays the first verse of Psalm 68 in Cyrillic which, when translated, reads, “Let God arise, let His enemies be scattered, let those also that hate Him flee before Him.” The cross is covered in a rich brown patina, and remains of the original light blue enamel designs are still visible. Size: 1.3″ W x 2.25″ H (3.3 cm x 5.7 cm).

Condition: Age-commensurate surface wear, very slight bending to overall form, fading to details and lettering, with light blue enamel remnants on obverse and rich brown patina throughout. Integral suspension loop as shown.

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection
