18th C. Russian Bronze Enameled Cross

Sold

Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 18th century CE. A cast-bronze cross with an integral suspension loop and an interior Golgotha cross; the original rod-shaped light beams extending of each exterior corner are missing. The monograms uPbC (King of Glory) and INRI (Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews) sit above the interior cross, and IC XC (Jesus Christ) is on either respective lateral end. Beneath the interior cross is a depiction of Adam’s skull in the cave, and the monogram MP (the place of the skull has become paradise) is beneath that. The verso displays five stylized hearts which are representative of the five wounds suffered by Jesus during the Crucifixion; there are also several illegible monograms as well. Both obverse and reverse display remnants of the original creamy yellow enameled adornments, and the bronze surfaces have a lovely light brown patina. Size: 1.35″ W x 2″ H (3.4 cm x 5.1 cm).

Condition: Original light beam rods missing. Age-commensurate surface wear, slight bending to overall form, fading and wear to lettering and details, and remnants of original enamel as well as light brown patina throughout. Integral suspension loop as shown.

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection
