Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 17th century CE. A cast-bronze cross with an integral suspension loop, four pellet-shaped light rays extending from the four external corners, and an interior Orthodox cross flanked by the symbolic spear and vinegar stick, two instruments of the Passion. The monogram uPbC (King of Glory) is above the interior cross, IC XC (Jesus Christ) is in each respective lateral terminal, and MP (the place of the skull has become paradise) is beneath the image of Adam’s skull in the cave. Around the main interior crossbar are two Cyrillic quotes; translated, one states, “the sun hid its light and the moon turned into blood;” and the other says, “Before Thy cross we bow down O Master, and Thy Holy Resurrection we glorify.” The verso displays an ornate heart and diamond motif. Remnants of the original yellow and white enameled designs are still visible, and nicely complement the pale-green and brown patina throughout. Size: 1.25″ W x 2.1″ H (3.2 cm x 5.3 cm).
Condition: Age-commensurate surface wear, slight bending to overall form, fading to lettering and details, remains of original white and yellow enamel visible, with pale green and light brown patina throughout. Integral suspension loop as shown.
