Lot 159, Auction 5/30/2017: Pr of Javanese Wayang Golek Wood & Textile Rod Puppets

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Java, ca. mid 20th c. CE. A pair of Javanese Wayang Golek rod-operated puppets, the characters distinguished by their headdresses, one resembling a golden tiara to match the regal figure's bejeweled earrings, the other probably representing Sita, wife of Rama (hero and heroine of the Ramayana), her sculpted headdress depicting a head of a garuda (mythical bird) looking backward. The refined nature of both figures may be seen in their elegant facial features, white complexions, and luxurious garments. Size: Sita w/ clothing 26" H (66 cm)

Condition: Heads not attached. Minor surface wear with slight paint loss and a nick/scratch here and there. Fabric show slight fading and wear.
