Pre-Columbian Spindle Whorl & Silver Jewelry Ensemble- Lot 74, Auction 2/26/2018

Sold

Pre-Columbian, South American, Ecuador, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. Presenting an elegant fusion of ancient and modern worlds, this ensemble includes a necklace and earrings made from Pre-Columbian ceramic spindle whorls – each one finely formed and manifesting marvelous incised geometric patterns – and black stone spacers – those belonging to the necklace pendant and one of the earrings are set within triangular sterling silver settings – and one of the earrings is set in a diamond-shaped sterling silver setting making for an assymetric pair – all with oxidized sterling silver wire tastefully coiled around certain areas. The necklace pendant is suspended from a double chain of sterling silver, one of the chains on each side is oxidized to create a rich contrast between its gun metal grey hues and the shiny reflective hues of the other sterling silver chain. Size: chains measure 26″ L (66 cm); pendant 1.5″ L x 1.5″ W (3.8 cm x 3.8 cm); earrings measure 1.375″ L x 1.5″ W (3.5 cm x 3.8 cm); 2.125″ L (5.4 cm) with French hooks; total weight: 30.5 grams

Condition: Spindle whorls show normal surface wear and nice patina. Spindle whorls are ancient; silver chains, settings, and fittings are modern. Generally excellent.

Provenance: private Colorado USA collection
